Partly, caffeine is a drug which is addictive. Mostly, it’s nice to drink. A coffee in the morning is a great way to start the day. During the day, taking 15 minutes and grabbing a coffee with someone is a nice way to get a break and also a great way to have a quick meeting with some.

Short answer – a mix of science, pleasure and practicalities.

What Rob said – a mixture of culture, learning to like the taste, a drug effect and it keeps you awake. It’s not for everyone, and you can get by without it (plus it can mess you up if you drink too much), but a lot of people do drink if for those reasons.

I don’t drink coffee. I just go for coffee breaks because I need a break and because sometimes we have cake!

Here in Europe it’s as much of a culture thing as drinking tea in England (or Guinness in Ireland) 🙂 But mostly it’s a good way to take yourself away from the computer for a while and actually have a *face to face conversation* (!) with another human being for a while!

It’s got caffeine in it so it helps make you awake (or very awake if you’re already awake!), plus its a “social lubricant”, a socially acceptable way of having a casual chat. Also, and most importantly, where there is coffee, there is often biscuits. That’s a fact. A fact I enjoy.
