I played a lot of videogames as a kid and still do when I get the time. They’re a good way to relax or stop thinking about other things if you need a break. It’s possible to play them too much – a lot of people have ruined their university degrees by playing games all the time – but in small amounts they’re fine.
I play a lot of Minecraft at the moment – currently I’m working on a large iron factory and reproducing the Eiffel Tower in iron. I also like strategy games – Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri is great, but quite old and hard to get into by today’s standards of games. I used to play Call of Duty but stopped buying the new versions so I haven’t played it in a while.
Video games are also partly why I got into my job – I became interested in 3D programming. When I was looking for projects at university, I found one about making 3D images of astrophysics simulations, which is basically game graphics programming. From there, I got into the simulations themselves, and that’s what I’m doing now.
But video games are actually pretty good for you – apparently hardcore gamers have better peripheral vision, and do better with reactions and eye/hand control in things like driving tests. Especially when you have to drive an obstacle course and then answer questions about the things you saw on the side of the road as you went past (“While you were busy swerving to avoid that other car, what color shirt was the woman on the side of the road wearing?).
Of course, everything in moderation – you can’t spend *all* your time playing videogames, you gotta go outside once in a while too 🙂
I was a pretty big fan when I was a kid, not so much now. Although I do still play a lot of call of duty. It’s a great way for me and my flatmates to unwind after a long day at work.
