I like fluid dynamics – it’s messy and difficult to understand, but fun to watch. I use it in my work all the time, watching the gas in galaxies slosh about, with supernova explosions going off all the time.

I know this is mean but my favourite thing about physics is that I don’t have to do most of it any more. Being a chemist I am biased though.

Haha Robert 🙂 Sam, I *hated* fluid dynamics!

For me, it’s knowing that with particle physics I really am working on the most fundamental of fundamental things – and that everything about the universe is built up off these particles.

My favourite thing about physics is the amazing pictures of space or galaxies. They’re good enough to put on your wall like art! Check out the astronomy picture of the day (google it) to see what I mean.

I like physics because there two theories that work well by themselves but don’t seem to match together – which is really exciting! For big stuff (anything bigger than atoms, which is everything you can see) a theory called special relativity works pretty well. For everything smaller than an atom (inside an atom) quantum mechanics is the name. The thing is, they seem to work in weirdly different ways, which is a big problem to try and solve. (Although the universe doesn’t care – it just is the way it is!)
