Very, very, very, very important!!
It teaches you skills, such as logical thinking, analysis, interpretation etc. that you can use in all sorts of places in life. I think its essential.
It’s not so much about what you learn (as in, the subjects themselves). The really important thing about science is that it teaches you to ask questions, and not just blandly accept what people are telling you. A very, very important life skill!
Important! Yes, it can be dull or hard work, but frankly if something was fun and easy all the time then no-one would pay you to do it. Science is crucial for modern society – everything from cereal to satellites uses science to improve it (yes, even cereal). If you study science, you’ll have a far better chance of getting a good job. And sure, it might seem useless and boring now, but I guarantee that you know someone whose life has been saved by modern medicine, and the phone in your pocket couldn’t exist without people studying science in school. So yep. It’s very important!
I think it’s just as important as teaching language, art and other topics. You see, we’re not all going to be the ones to cure cancer or make the most amazing music – but as long as someone does then everyone benefits! I think schools should encourage students to have a go at everything, and support them to learn as much as possible, not just science. If a student reeeeallly wants to learn about science, or music, or art, then they will get good marks and keep going, maybe to become a scientist or musician or artist one day!
The important thing about learning science it is helps you to think clearly – it helps you solve problems, and problems always happen every now and again!
Other than that, I have nothing to add to what Kate, Claire, Sam and Matt have said. Like learning to speak and to do maths, learning how to ask questions is one of the fundamental skills of life.
