It was only about 50 years ago that the geosciences were merged by a very important theory – called the theory of plate tectonics. In 200 years time I think we will have a very sophisticated view of what goes on inside volcanoes. I think we will be able to see them in 3D by using geophysics, and we will be able to understand how the magmas work because of geochemistry (the kind of work I do). It’s exciting to be at this stage of our understanding, because we know quite a lot – but we know there is so much more to know!
